I prefer Communicative, Task-based, and Affective humanistic approaches.   These three approaches could combine together in an effective way of teaching English.

By Combining Communciative with Task-based approaches, students will have a context or a task; in this context they are also required to communicate, or learn to communicate, by using the target language.

Affective humanistic is important too.  It is in a comfortable and active atmosphere that students will have potential to get into the context.

    Hi Tim,
Affective Humanistic might be a suitable method for your teaching. I think it requires the teacher to be at least friendly and willing to help students to learn. And this method is, as far as I know (really tiny little part of) it now, this may be the way that not only helps students’ language skills but also push them toward self-inquery.

Somehow, I feel a teacher’s personality has a lot to do with the approaches he/she chooses. You probably would agree with this. Most English teachers I know are kind, hard-working, enthusiastic and open-minded. With these qualities, they have no difficulties creating a pleasant atmosphere; however, they also encounter some “discipline” problems because they seem to be “too” nice as teachers. It’s a matter of balance, isn’t it?

Yes, to tell the truth that’s one of the problems I have to face. I am always friendly and nice, but sometimes too nice would do no good.
